our audio choices

In my group my group use a range of audio sound including
  • heartbeat
  • chopping noise
  • foot steps
  • loud ringing noise
  • screeching car noise

These sounds were used for many different reasons and to give various effects to the audience.

Heartbeat- the heart beat was used to build suspense. this was done though an increase in sound and pace of the heartbeat this lead the audience to thing bad was going to happen like in physo (1960)

Chopping noice-  The sharpe chopping noice maxs the antagonist seem dangerious to the audience. the sound also makes him seem dangerous which will create a enigma.

Foot Steps- These were used to build suspence. the contrats between shots of the contrasting characters builds up suspence of whats going to happen when they meet.

Loud ringing noise- This was used to make the women seem dazed by the injection highlighting that
she is in trouble and not in control of her body. My group would use a ringing sound everythimg the killer attacked like in phsyco

Screeching car- my group used a burning ruber sound as the killer made his exist this would create an egnima of where the film is going.

planning editing styles

Editing is a very important for film making as it can create effects on the audience. for intance is the pace is fast it create supence as everything is moving so fast the audience want to know what is going to happen next. On the other hand if the pace is slow it can have a very errir feel on the audience creating tension of what is going to happen. Here we see by the use of editing the audience prepection of what is going on in the scene can be controlled through editing which illustrates the importance. There are many different styles of editing some of which are bellow.

                                                  jump cut
fade
straight cut
kulveshov effect
 dissolve
timing of shots (slow or fast )
montage
fast cut
visual effect
eye line match
graphic match

In our opening scene we will use many jump cuts. A jump cut is a abrupt transition from one scene to another. This Will be  used this to speed up our opening scene and create a more intense opening. this can be seen when we switch from the killer to the decoy. The jump cut helps to increase the suspence between the women and the killer. it also helps to create an enigma which makes the opening scene more engaging.

We will also use match on action, which is A cut which splices two different views of the same action together at the same moment in the movement, making it seem to continue uninterrupted. This technique will be used when we see the train goes past. my group will use match on action when tring to empliy there is a train journey was over a long period. we will use short shot scenes and images to create the feel of a long train journey. by using match on action it will create the effect that the train was a long journey

My group will also use the kulveshov effect. This is when two shots are put  together to apply a third meaning. For instance in the first shot their could be one man with blood poring out of him and the second shot a man running away. This evokes the feeling that the man running away has injured the man bleeding. My group will use this effect when the antagonist attracts the women we will no show the injection but the fainted and distort women being dragged away will imply the antagonist has inured the women. We will also use a very similar technique.

Montage -This is the reverse of slow editing in which shots are quickly joined together in order to create fast paced motion that provides the audience with excitement.

Dissolve- When an image is blended into another, the other disappears as the other one comes in.

Fade-When an edit fades from a scene into a black background or a black background fades into a scene.

My edditing styles will make my thriller film conventional because by using them effectively they will engage and suspend tyhe audience. This will make the film more successful as it has done its purpose of a thriller film. in addition the syles will create enigma to build tension in the film.

film schedule

This is my groups filming timetable we have decided to spilt our filming into three days of work 4 days appart from eachtother, we figured this would be the best idea as it would be easy to look back on footage and refilm parts in the four day gaps if anything didn't go according to plan. We plan to finish filming by the 4th of december this gives us exactly 1 month and 3 days to finish editing and completing our blogs this is plenty of time to make changes and improve our coursework grade. It was difficult to plan around everyones personal life as our four actors all go to different sixthforms and colleges and cannot all be present at the same time. Luckily we was fortunate to find 1 days where all the actors could be present and 1 where three actors could be present we used the other day to simply film the small bits of the film that we would need to include to get the opening sequence flowing and to create a better enigma to our story line.

risk assessment

It is very important that my group consider the risks we may face while filming. If we didn't do this we could come into a situation where time could be lost or an accident could happen. To prevent this we will make a table where we will consider all the risk that could possible happen while filming. By doing this it will allow our group to try to prevent any danger from happening. This will also give us time to think about a scenes even more. When writing up the risk assessment it gave us a chance to look in to depth about our film, about what why where when and how. this made gave us a chance to think about what was happening and what we could change. and to be safe we may have to do things differently. For instance instead of climbing on a wall to get a high angle shot we decided to put the camera on a pole and move it in the air using safe camera equipment. this could prevent an accident.

Description of hazard
Prevention of hazard
Trailing leads and equipment
Use gaffer tape to secure leads and clear object in the way
Equipment could be broke
Check all equipment before filming
Wet stairs and wet leaves
Use a broom to remove water and Debary from dangerous places
Logs and sticks
Will remove dangerous objects from filming scene
People in the area walking past (disturbances)

we will wait till later at night when there is less people around.

Darkness can cause us not to see objects in front of us.

we will use torches to be able to see

planning the mise-scene

Throughout duration of our opening scene we have a range of different setting which helps to ratifies different emotions to the audience, each setting is different and is meant to have a different emotion. my group has four locations all aimed to have a different effect on the reader. We start in an abandoned location were there is a lot of gore and blood highlighting that the killing is very dangerous. And when the women is captured the audience will automatically refer back to this scene and think that this may happen to the women. There is also iconography in this scene where the finger heart and axe. this all have the connotations of pain and danger. By starting the scene like this the audience already are faced with an enigma making the scene more engaging. The second setting is the dark gloomy alley way were the young women see our decoy who is there to throw the audience off the sent of the killer, plus building up suspense. The setting is dark and mysterious and give the impression of danger. The iconography used in this scene is a phone, the way in which the decoy brings it out of his coat and the heightening of sound will give the impression it is weapon, however it is only a phone.the previous scene is very important as it makes scene three come as a massive shock that a police officer would be standing there. The third scene is under an under path where it is very mysterious and dangerous looking connecting with with the look of the police officer. The iconography in this scene will be an injection which is used to drug the women. This is a mysterious weapon as the audience do not no the effect it has on the women.

My group have used a police officers costume. the blue costume signifies trust which is a common denotation of a police officer. however we change this denotation and change it round where the officer is actually the killer. We will contrast the denotation of a police officer and connect it with our narrative which is mysterious. therefore exhilarating our audience. this makes the audience more intensified by the shock of the of the officer killing  young women which makes our film more engaging. in addition this creates an enigma therefore intensifying the narrative. make up is very important so our group decided to follow natural codes and convention of a thriller film. where the innocent women is very pale to highlight the women's innocents and pure this will ratify to the audience she is innocent and has done nothing wrong therefore making them feel sorry for her.

Throughout our opening scene we will use a lot of low key lighting to hide the face of the killer and the decoy creating a mysterious feel for the audience, by hiding the face of both characters It will create suspense. By using low key lighting it will create a mysterious enigma. We have a range of different colours to create different effects. The light covered clothing has the connotations of pure and Innocent which will connect with the impression we want to give the audience of the women. The black coat the decoy will be wearing will have the dark connotations of a killer to throw the audience off the scent of the real killer. The colour of the injection. facial expressions and Our body language of the decoy will be very mysterious and dangerous to give the impression that the women is in danger. We will also use his facial expression of the decoy to have similarity's with his body language to connote the dangerous feel to the audience.

Throughout the opening scene we will use positioning to highlight the importance of our charters. In scene where there is only one main charter we will focus the cameras on the main character to show the audience the importance of that character. where there are many main characters we will position the camera in the place where the character with the most power can been seen.

planning the production

camera operator

  • we believe it very important to have someone using the camera who has had previous experience, max had used a camera so he was perfect for role. We also desided to use more than one camera, we decsided to use 3 these people who also have had previous experience.

importance
ads

throughout the opening scene we wanted actors who had proficanilly acted before giving our scene the most realistic feel, and felt that by having our group in the scene may not give the most realistic feel to the film, plus my group wouldnt be able to concentrate on the filming and directing. This is why we decided to use people who had proffisonally acted before.
  • Pheobe Snellgrove- we wanted someone who looked in there young twenties and was business looking like.
  • James Garzke- we needed someone who has the size a build of someone quite old.
  • Joe Lascarez- has the connations of being quite mysterios and would be perfect for our killer decoy.
  • Bobby Burke- we needed someone who looked like a average person and could act.

sound technician- we will do as a group. We feel sound is very important and as a group we will use our individual idear and cobine them to make the best sound.
importance of sound why we are doing it as group

editors- we will also do this as a group. everyone in the group has editing experence and by working together we will get the best effect therefore making the film the best it can be.

film directors-This will be my role. I feel i am very good at managing a team and i am very creative and will be able to think fast to change something that may need changing. I also have a great understanding of camera shots which would also be very helpful when directing.

location mangers and storyboard organisers - My group felt amie would be best for this role as she is very orgainsed. This is very important to be very organizing of the filming. as if not scenes and work can become confussing. In addition it is also be very important to organsied when handiling what shot goes when and wear, plus to know which one of the three camera goes in which scene, where in the scene and at what time. as well as organiser she will also be location manager as my group felt both roles over laped and the skills need for one would work perfect for the other.

Narrative Theory

Propp’s theory of narrative seems to be based in a male orientated environment (due to his theory actually reflecting early folk tales) and as such critics often dismiss the theory with regard to film. However, it may still be applied because the function than the gender of characters is the basis of the theory. An example of this could be the hero is woman. However many Critics Propp theory, Saying the strict order of characters and events is restrictive. Other would suggest rather applying the functions and events randomly as we meet new narratives. E.g. the hero may kill the villain earlier than Propp expects. Changing the traditional format will change the whole way the text is received. Another criticism would be many claim there are many more character types than Propp suggests and we should feel free to identify them. E.g. the stooge in a sci-fi film, who is usually nameless and usually killed early on to suggest the power of the alien force, is a typical modern character type. In addition propps theory also relates to Fairy Stories and to other similar narratives based around quests however it does not apply to all narratives.

Tzvetan Todorov simplified the idea of narrative theory whilst also allowing a more complex interpretation of film texts with his theory of Equilibrium and Disequilibrium. Equilibrium is a simple formula can be applied to virtually all narratives - it is a more formal way of thinking about the beginning, middle and end, and it takes into account Aristotle's theory that all drama is conflict i.e. there is disequilibrium at the heart of every narrative.  These help to create a new equilibrium creating a better narrative. The narrative is not seen as a linear structure but a circular one. The narrative is driven by attempts to restore the equilibrium. However, the equilibrium attained at the end of the story is not identical to the initial equilibrium. Todorov argues that narrative involves a transformation. The characters or the situations are transformed through the progress of the disruption. The disruption itself usually takes place outside the normal social framework, outside the ‘normal’ social events. The fictional environment begins with a state of equilibrium (everything is as it should be), it then suffers some disruption (disequilibrium), and new equilibrium is produced at the end of the narrative.  There are five stages the narrative can progress through. A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be)  then to A disruption of that order by an event thirdly A recognition that the disorder has occurred An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption A return or restoration of a new equilibrium.

Aristotle has his own theory however it connects to Tzvetan Todorov however they have different opinions. Aristotle's literary criticism is probably most famous for the "unities": time, place, and action. Aristotle's most complete analysis is of 'tragedy', which is arguably the basis of most 'serious drama'. Aristotle uses  Headings that are used by some producers and screenwriters some of which include Inciting Incidents, Dramatic Questions ,Character Goal , Antagonist/Protagonist, Stakes, Resolution, Sympathy/Empathy>These headings are very close to those suggested by the father of narrative theory Aristotle.

For my groups thriller film will will follow the conventions of Tzvetan Todorov. we decided to use todorov theory as it allows a more complex interpretation of film texts with his theory of Equilibrium and Disequilibrium. and by creating this it makes a more believable film, which is our main objective in our thriller film.
