Thriller is a genre of literature, film and television that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. There are many codes and conventions of a thriller film that help to intensify the genre. Many of which i descried below

In all thriller films there is a protagonist and a antagonises. theses are the good guy and the bad guy. both character's help to bring meaning to the movie creating an enigma which makes the audience want to continue watching. In insidious the protagonist is trying to save his boy and is being stopped by the antagonise which is stopping him from doing so. This creates an enigma which makes the film more entertaining. this makes both characters very important in the conventions of a thriller film. We see the antagonises behind the protagness highlighting

one of the codes and convention of a thriller film is the the setting, these setting help to give a spooky mysterious feel which create an comparisons with the story line, all aimed to give the audience a greater effect.there are normally unknown and disturbing setting in a thriller film this normally give the scenes a better and more effective feel.  For example in the opening film trailer Saw, the lights are off. The dark, gloomy setting creates a mysterious feel, which builds the tension of what is going to happen next in the scene, this makes it better territory this is common in thriller films. The simmalarity between the setting help to emphasies the story line making the audience more compelled to watch the movie.

The paste of music is very important for thriller films, as both fast and slow paste effect the way the audience see the film plus the paste of the music helps to  provoke meanings and enigmas in the film. In James bond the “there no tomorrow” the paste is very fast in the opening scene therefore creating and intense tension building feel, living the audience glued to the screen. The change in paste creates the feel that something bad is going to happen. This can be seen when bond is trying to get away with the plane the music is slow but still has a base beat behind it this emphases the fact that the music is suggesting something bad is going to happen. In comparison the loud beat still intensifies the audience and keeps the tension high but not to high suggesting a different factor is about to happen. This highlights the importance of the paste of music and how different tempos can have different effects, and by using different effects it can create different sensations for the audience. If the temp is very low it can suggest that something bad is going to happen however if the paste is very fats it can intensify the audience perspective.

Low key lighting is commonly used in horror film to hide the killers face creating an enigma of the killer. The audience cannot see the killer due to the low key lighting therefore creating suspence of who and what the killer is. low key lighting is  is a style oflighting for photography, film or television. It is a necessary element in creating a chiaroscuro effect. Traditional photographic lighting, three-point lighting uses a key light, a fill light, and a back light for illumination. This can be seen in the scene from prom night where the audience cannot see the killer face creating the question who and why they are doing surtain things therefor creating an enigma.

iconography is a very import to the thriller conventions as it creates suspence and tension. We see use of iconography in the scene from screem when the killer pulls a long knife from his coat. this bring across to the audiece that the women is going to die unless stopped by a protagness the iconograthy helps to identify conculsion for the audience and what is likely to happen. therefore if the women is saved it is intesfied by the icongraphy as she could have been killed by the use of e.g a weapon. This hilight the importance of the use of icongraphy as without it the thriller genre would lack in tension and suspence.

enigma  is a very impotain code and convetion of thriller film as it is like glue gluing the audiece to their chair as it makes the film more exsiting, and strethens the plot as the audiece whant to know what happends next. Plus it is used in most or not all thriller films. An engima is a person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand and A riddle or paradox. we see stong enigmas in the sub-genre mystiory thrillers. It makes the audiece want to keep waching. Enigma is very important to the codes and convetions of a thriller film as it helps to create reasond for the audience to keep watching without it the thriller genre would be weak and boring.

  1. You have made a good start in analysing the opening sequences above, however your post is incomplete and this is because you have not completed your analysis of your two chosen films.

Refer back to your notes from the lesson, which will enable you to complete this task
