Sound
Sounds are used in films to create a grater impact on the actions in the sceens from films, the numours types a techniques help to create a more entertaining film, as with the use of sound the audience are drawn in to the film and the tecniques help to create drifferents emotion for the audience. In addition the use of sounds creates another side to characters. for instence if the audience where unawear of the antagonist non-digetic mysterious sounds could evoke the feeling tghat that chacter is not the bad guy. This highlights that sound can be used to create a characters identity. sound can also be used to warn the audience of a killing. This can be sceen in phsycho where the non- digetic sound illustrates to the audience that something bad is going to happen.
It is also used to create a response from the audience to greaten the
impact of the film. There are a immense number of sound techniques in the
opening scene of screem Which give the audience different
perspectives of sound use to create different feelings.
Diegetic Sound
is sound which is part of the film world it can includes dialogue and music
from a radio. The sound can be on or off screen. We see this in the opening of scream where the women talks to the killer the non-diegetic help to improve the audience reaction to what is going on. it also connects the character together and create an engaging narrative. This stress certain
moments in the film to give a greater effect of the film and making it more entertaining for tha audience.
Throughout the fast paced
scene there is non-diegetic sound used all the way through. Non - Diegetic Sound is the Sound
which is not part of the film world it can be a soundtrack, sound effects or
voiceover. the sound makes the audiences wonder what is going to happen therefore
creating an enigma. In addition the non-diegetic sound help to heighten certain
moment in films creating a emotion from the audience in this case the tension
of what is going to happen if the young women does not see her parents will create an emotion from the audience the non-diegetic becomes more intense evoking the feeling that something bad is going to happen.
On screen sound is where You can see where the sound is coming from, for instance the radio, but in this case the phone noice of her to her parents. This is a tool used to emphases important moments in films and a common factor in all genres of films. This give another pespective of sound for the audience to consider this can include important information which can seem more believevable from another source.
Off Screen sound is used in the opening scene from
the scream movie. Off Screen sound is the sound you hear but cannot see where it
is coming from, but it makes sense to the film world. we see this when the killer is in another room of the house, the audience hear noise as the killer moves but cannot see the
full extent of the damage. And only see a section of the damage after it has happened. The sound helps
to highlight that the action we see is not all the action in the scene. This
suggests to the audience that more damage is going on therefore giving them a
wider imagination of what is going on in the scene, this all suggest the danger of the killer.
In the
opening scene on the scream movie we see clear use of Parallel Sound. This
can be sound you hear in a film that is expected for instance like a scene with
children playing on a beach the parallel sounds would be laughter, talking and
the sea. This can be seen in screem where you see fire, the parallel sound would be the alarm bell ringing. This is very effective in film making as is allows
the reader to relate with the sound and the image together to create a more effective feel.
Although there is no Contrapuntal Sound it is a very effective technique. Contrapuntal sound
is when the sound does not match the expectations of what you are viewing an
example of this is Jaws. The scenes of the beach are accompanied by the
contrapuntal sound of the theme tune ‘dur dur’ which does not it in with the
happy images. This can also be seen in the film psycho where a loud piano like
sound is played when the killer is killing people. This gives a different perspective
than any other techniques. The repetitive sound let the audience know when
something bad is happening in psycho case when someone is about to die.
You have definied the different terminology words well and you have related your points to various examples to support the points that you are making.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this post does not show enough understanding of the thriller genre and this is because you need to analyse a thriller film and just concentrate on the sound that is being used. You then need to write an analysis to show your understanding of the effect the sound has on the audience.
